Google and NextEra Energy Partner to Revive Nuclear Plant for Data Center Power
Google has entered a 25-year agreement with NextEra Energy to purchase clean energy from the Duane Arnold nuclear plant in Iowa, which is slated to restart by 2029. The 615-megawatt facility will primarily power Google's data centers, addressing the surging electricity demands driven by AI growth. A portion of the output will also be supplied to Central Iowa Power Cooperative under a long-term contract.
NextEra will assume full ownership of the decommissioned plant, opting for revival over new construction to bypass regulatory hurdles and cost overruns. The deal underscores how tech giants are securing reliable, carbon-free energy to sustain their expanding infrastructure needs.
